Location: Gallery Campus Sint Lucas Antwerp, Van Schoonbekestraat 143, 2018 Antwerp (BE)
From the 13 of January Bie Michels takes up residency in the Showroom of Sint Lucas Antwerpen with her performative project Piles of bricks (working process). Together with Liantsoa Rakotonaivo (Madagascar), one of the artists who participated in her film La couleur de la brique and Ingahy Kama, they will work during 8 weeks on a performance in which forms and meanings of brick constructions will be experienced.
Bricks will be piled up through drawings and physical exercises. They will investigate physical interactions, moves and positions in relation to constructions and limited spaces and see how this will result in new personal, symbolic and political meanings. Intimacy and collectiveness play an important role in this performative journey.
Four coaches will follow them during the working process, each starting from a particular angle: Paulo Guerreiro will focus on notions of composition-in-real-time and of the brick as a third performer, a tool, going beyond the perception of the brick as just an object. Sonia Si Ahmed will consider what can be sensed in the meeting of their different textures. With Geert Belpaeme the abstract relationship of body to stone and the historical significance that these stones infuse in space and onto the bodies will be explored. Marta Castelo a Portuguese artist and teacher of Ceramics in the Fine Arts Faculty, University of Lisbon, will explore the relationship between nature and construction, bearing in mind the notions of ephemeral and fixation.
This project will end with a performance on the 20th February in the Showroom of Sint Lucas Antwerpen.
